How Have TV's Changed Since England Last Won the World Cup?
england1966July 3rd 1966 is a date that will be remembered for a long time in British history. It is the date when over 32 million people sat down in front of their TV sets to watch England overcome Germany in the World Cup Final. This year, we will all sit around our own television sets and watch the same competition once more. But just how much has our viewing experience changed since we last picked up the World Cup? Here is a brief look into how far TV’s have changed over the years. Resolution Revolution blackandwhitetvThe black and white era of the television set ended in the late 1960’s, but before that Britain's TV viewing experience was limited to just two colours. Many then, would have watched England lift the cup without the luxury of colour. However, the late 60’s and early 70’s saw the introduction of mainstream colour TV’s, accompanied by a whole new era of technology which was set to revolutionize the television industry. For example, television’s equipped with Electronic Standards Converter capabilities allowed people to view some spectacular images such as the 1969 Moon landing or the 1972 Olympic Games. CRT screens were the most common type at the time. By today standards, they were unimpressive, but for television viewers in the 1970's, they were the best (and bulkiest) sets that were on offer. The Bigger the Better The invention and manufacturing of bigger models of TV’s was the next project to be taken on. RPTVThese models were mostly RPTV and were built in such a way that they would use projection technology in order to facilitate the large screens. Although they were not as clear as the CRT models, they would prove to be key in setting the standards for what was required to make large and visually clear screens. With the progression of visual technology through these years, we saw the introduction of Liquid Crystal Display and Plasma units being made. These flat panel models would take the best of the previous displays but would also shed down on the size and weight of the units. These would continue to progress throughout the decades with improvements not only being made in the displays but also in the performance and features of the TV models as well. LG-LB550V_2This brings us to the to the HD era – which we find far more familiar. With the technology available to us as of now in terms of Full HD, 3D, 4K Ultra and Interactive Visual screens, we can only look back and marvel at how far we have come since the black and white era. Yet, at the same time, we can now ponder as to how much more we are yet to enjoy thanks to the exciting potential of today's TV industry.
