England’s Injury List Continues to Grow Ahead of World Cup

rodriguez2Southampton and England striker Jay Rodriguez is the latest name to be added to England’s list of injured players ahead of the World Cup.  The 24-year-old was injured during Southampton’s clash with Manchester City after landing awkwardly on his knee.

Rodriguez was stretchered off the pitch with a suspected knee injury, and after examination, he was ruled out for 6 months due to a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

His Southampton team-mate Jack Cork expressed his concerns and how upset everyone was at hearing the news. “It’s horrible seeing your close friend who’s doing so well, and got such a great chance of going to the World Cup, get a bad injury like that.” He said. “My thoughts are with him and all his family and I just hope his recovery goes well.”

What Does This Mean for Roy Hodgson and the England Team?

Roy Hodgson is definitely going through a tough time right now in terms of team selection. After already losing Kyle Walker and Theo Walcott, this latest injury will only add to his concerns.

Furthermore, with Premier League games still raging on, Hodgson will certainly be worrying that more of his players could end up on the injury table before England fly out to Brazil.

The loss of Rodriguez will have more of a psychological effect on Hodgson and the England boys than it will a physical effect, with the players and fans alike worried that anyone could get injured at any moment.

The title race and relegation battle in the Premier League is reaching its climax, and so every team is  passionate about winning their remaining games. All it takes is one or two hesitant or misplaced tackles, and England could be struck with yet more injuries.

However, so long as England can retain the use of their key forward players Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney, I feel that they will be able to manage well at the World Cup.

Potential back up options in the form of Danny Welbeck and Jermain Defoe will also play their part, and so for now, Hodgson should be able to field a team that is capable of winning – and winning well.
