Victor Valdés’ Injury & Spain’s Chances in the World Cup

Victor Valdés Injury Rules Him Out of World Cup

images-10Victor Valdés’s chances of going to the World Cup have been shattered after the 32-year-old picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee.

The Barcelona and Spanish national goalkeeper was seen crying as he was stretchered off during his team’s 3-0 victory against Celta Vigo.

This blow will mean that Valdés will not only miss the World Cup trip with Spain. But it will also be the end of his final season at the Catalan club before retirement.

When asked for his views, Valdés’s Barcelona and Spanish teammate Andrés Iniesta said: “It is a terrible piece of news. It’s very hard when something like this happens but we have to keep going with the same spirit we have always had.”

The rest of the Spanish international quad, who travel to Brazil in July, will no doubt share Iniesta’s comments.

Will an Absent Valdes Hinder Spain’s World Cup Chances?

Victor Valdes’ injury will certainly not help Spain, but other goalkeeping options are readily available.

Although Iker Casillas has appeared to have lost his first team place as Real Madrid goalkeeper, the Spaniard was always going to be jostling with Valdes for a starting place in the national team. The lack of playing time for Casillas during the season could prove to be a small niggle for Spain, but Casillas is more than capable of getting back to his old ways very quickly.

Most affected by the news of Valdés’s injury will be Spain’s third and fourth choice goalkeepers David de Gea and Pepe Reina. The exclusion of Valdés in the team sheet will mean that one of them will be promoted to second choice goalkeeper and will potentially be able to get some World Cup playing time under their belt.

This minor setback will not be one that will stop Spain from being successful. After winning the last World Cup in 2010 and the imgres-5Euros in 2012, Spain are clearly still favourites to win the World Cup this summer, and providing that they do not pick up any more injuries along the way, they will remain in that position.
